The name ‘Senyar’ meaning ‘lion’ was suggested by the United Arab Emirates for the upcoming cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. It will be the second cyclone in the post-monsoon season, following Cyclone Montha, which hit Andhra Pradesh on October 28. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about heavy rains in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Tamil Nadu. The islands are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall until November 25, with wind speeds reaching up to 65 km/h.
A low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca and south Andaman Sea is predicted to intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours and a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal within 48 hours. The IMD forecasts that these weather conditions could lead to rain in coastal districts of Odisha between November 25 and 27. Authorities in Odisha have taken advance preparedness measures to handle the system effectively in case of further intensification, as stated by minister Suresh Pujari.
The Meteorological Office has issued a warning for heavy rains and severe gusty winds in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The weather system forming over the Bay of Bengal is gradually intensifying and is projected to become cyclonic storm ‘Senyar’ by November 26. Meteorologists are currently analyzing various weather models to predict the cyclone’s trajectory after November 26. The exact landfall location and timing will only be known once it reaches cyclonic storm intensity.
According to the IMD, it is too early to determine whether the cyclone will move northward towards Odisha or Bangladesh or make landfall along the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coast. Besides the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, heavy rainfall is also expected in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Another low-pressure area in the Cape Comorin region may develop around November 25, affecting the southwest Bay of Bengal and Sri Lanka.
In its latest bulletin, the IMD mentioned, ‘Heavy rainfall is likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands from 24th to 28th; in Tamil Nadu on 24th -25th; in Kerala & Mahe from 24th to 26th; in Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on the 24th, with very heavy rainfall in Andaman & Nicobar Islands from 24th to 26th; Kerala & Mahe on 24th November.’ The forecast also includes ‘Thunderstorm with lightning expected in Tamil Nadu on 24th & 25th; in Kerala & Mahe from 24th to 26th; in Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on 24th November and in Andaman & Nicobar Islands with gusty winds of 40-50 kmph in the next 6 days.’
The cyclone ‘Senyar’ is expected to bring challenging weather conditions to the region, with authorities and residents urged to stay informed and follow safety protocols. Stay tuned to IMD updates for the latest information on Cyclone Senyar and its impact on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Tamil Nadu.
