The Egypt Film Commission (EFC) is striving to increase the number of foreign productions in Egypt, following successful shoots such as Guy Ritchie’s ‘Fountain of Youth’ at the Giza Pyramids, Neil Burger’s ‘Inheritance’ in Cairo, Jon M. Chu’s ‘Wicked: For Good,’ and Mr. Beast’s ‘I Spent 100 Hours Inside the Pyramids.’ Line production for these projects was managed by various renowned production companies in Egypt like ASAP Productions, Hama Film Productions, Misr International Films, and Filmedia LLC.
ASAP Productions also handled part of the filming for season one of the Paramount series ‘The Agency,’ shot in Cairo in 2024. Amin El Masr, the executive producer at ASAP Productions, is actively pursuing new projects. Filmedia, another production company, worked on ‘Wicked: For Good’ and previously collaborated on Colin Trevorrow’s ‘Jurassic World: Dominion.’ Ahmed Kardous, Filmedia’s CEO, expressed gratitude to Universal and is currently engaging in discussions regarding multiple international projects.
The EFC arranged exclusive access to the Giza Pyramids for Mr. Beast’s internet show, which garnered over 200 million views on YouTube. Since its establishment in 2019, the EFC has supported over 90 international productions, showcasing Egypt’s diverse landscapes and seasoned production services. Ahmed Badawi, the managing director of the EFC, highlights the country’s unique appeal to production companies worldwide.
Egypt’s government is actively working to promote the country’s cultural treasures, with initiatives like the Grand Egyptian Museum. The EFC, a subsidiary of the Egyptian Media Production City, boasts expansive facilities and offers a 30% cashback incentive for on-site expenditures. Plans are underway to introduce additional production incentives for off-site spending, with discussions ongoing within government circles.
The EFC serves as a comprehensive resource for filming in Egypt, assisting with permits and connecting with local production experts. Recent international shoots include documentaries like ‘Treasure Hunters: On the Tracks of Khufu’ and series such as ‘The Big Fuck-Up.’ To bolster ties with Asian and African markets, the EFC has signed agreements with prominent groups in China and Africa.
Asian productions like Korean TV series ‘Hit and Miss Tour 3’ and Chinese film ‘Welcome to Dragon Restaurant’ have recently chosen Egypt as a filming location. The EFC continues to foster collaborations with international partners, as demonstrated by recent meetings with Indian officials. At Cannes, the EFC showcased a unified Egyptian Pavilion alongside prestigious film festivals, securing the Best Pavilion Design Award.
