Egypt’s Economy: Stability and Poverty Challenges

Egypt captured international attention with the Sharm el-Sheikh conference in October and the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in November. However, the focus on these events overshadowed other domestic news, such as the parliamentary elections. The elections have been criticized for lack of meaningful political participation, with pro-government parties dominating. There is skepticism about the elections’ impact, as they are seen as a race among loyalists to President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Despite the economic improvements, challenges persist. Capital injections from international institutions have stabilized the economy, leading to increased credit ratings and GDP growth. However, concerns remain about the state’s control in the economy. While business sentiment is positive, non-oil private sector activity has been in contraction, reflecting low consumer demand. Many Egyptians still struggle with poverty and high living costs, despite some sectors seeing improved wages.

In rural areas like the Nile Delta and Upper Egypt, poverty rates remain high, with limited benefits from economic reforms felt by farmers like Mahmoud. Subsidies for fuel and food have been removed, making life more expensive for vulnerable populations. The IMF-induced reforms have raised criticism for prioritizing free market economics over social welfare. While Egypt’s economy shows promising signs, there is a need for further improvements to address income disparities and support those most affected by poverty.

Overall, Egypt’s economic stability is a mixed picture of progress and persistence of poverty challenges. Despite positive developments like increased exports and stable currency, the impact on vulnerable populations like rural farmers is limited. More inclusive economic policies are needed to ensure that the benefits of recovery efforts reach all segments of Egyptian society.
