Ethiopia Launches Africa’s Largest Hydroelectric Dam Amidst Egyptian Opposition

NAIROBI – Ethiopia officially launched Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam on Tuesday, a project that will supply electricity to millions of Ethiopians while escalating tensions with downstream Egypt. The inauguration of the dam has added strain to the already contentious relationship between the two countries. Egypt, heavily reliant on the Nile River for its water supply, fears that the dam could reduce its water share and impact agricultural production. The project, known as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), has faced vehement opposition from Egypt since its inception.
