European Union Fines Elon Musk’s X €120 Million for Violating Digital Service Rules

The European Union imposed a €120 million fine on Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) for violating digital service rules, impacting account verification and transparency. The decision was taken in the midst of a new conflict with the US government led by President Donald Trump.
The European Commission introduced the new Digital Services Act (DSA) to enforce the first penalty under the legislation. ‘X’ provides account verification with a blue checkmark following a rigorous process, which does not comply with the EU Commission’s regulations.
In December 2023, the EU began an official investigation under the DSA regulations against ‘X.’ The violation was discovered in July 2024.
The company known as ‘Twitter’ in 2022 underwent changes post Musk’s acquisition, implementing a verification process giving a ‘blue checkmark’ after rigorous verification. The EU found that anyone who contributes money without verifying the identity behind the account is in violation, potentially leading to repercussions for users.
The European Commission stated that this deception directly affects users by exposing them to scams. Moreover, the DSA violates include breaching user privacy by providing information to researchers.
The Vice President, J.D. Vance, and others against the action taken against the operation conducted under ‘X’s name took center stage against the EU decision. Subscribe to stay updated on this issue.
