France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have initiated the process to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program. The triggering of the so-called ‘snapback sanctions,’ a measure the U.S. has supported, marks a significant development in the ongoing tensions with Iran over its nuclear activities. The E3 countries collectively notified the UN Security Council on Thursday of their decision to activate the automatic snapback mechanism. This move comes after Iran’s gradual retreat from its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
