Surprisingly, despite the known damaging effects of pre-diabetes on blood vessels due to excess glucose, leading to cardiovascular diseases, there is limited research on the benefits of lowering blood sugar levels and escaping the ‘pre’ intermediate range. This was the focus of a study led by endocrinologist Andreas Birkenfeld, director of the institute in Tübingen. The team analyzed data from 2,427 individuals monitored for 21 years, all initially in the pre-diabetes range and overweight or obese. Adjustments were made to compare individuals with the same BMI or age, focusing on those who successfully reversed pre-diabetes through lifestyle changes.
