On Sunday, Indian cricket history was etched in golden letters as the women’s team clinched their first-ever World Cup, defeating South Africa by 52 runs. Before this, South Africa won the toss and invited India to bat. India set a target of 299 runs after enjoying a strong start with a total collapse of South Africa’s team at 246 runs.
Throughout the tournament, the Indian team showed consistent and impressive performances in batting, bowling, and fielding, with several factors contributing to their victory. This was a significant moment for Indian women’s cricket, as they had previously reached the World Cup final in 2005 and 2017 but had failed to emerge as champions.
The opening pair of Shefali Verma and Smriti Mandhana set the tone for India, with both players scoring well in the early overs. Verma’s aggressive approach earned her 87 runs off 78 balls, including seven boundaries and two sixes. However, despite Verma’s efforts, South Africa fought back, limiting India to a strong but achievable start.
In South Africa’s innings, Deepti Sharma shone with a remarkable all-round performance. After Mandhana’s dismissal for 45 runs in the 19th over, Sharma continued aggressively, scoring 58 runs off 58 balls with three fours and a six. Additionally, Sharma took five wickets for 39 runs in 9.3 overs, playing a crucial role in India’s victory.
