Municipalities in Minas Gerais spent around R$ 6 million in Pix amendments to finance music shows without informing the federal government that the funds were used for this purpose. The expenses on musical attractions were not reported on Transferegov – a portal created to bring more transparency to Union’s financial transactions. In total, there were 33 performances paid with funds distributed by the National Congress, but with no trace in the federal government’s platform.
In practice, this type of budget is sent by parliamentarians to municipalities, usually with priority attention to each deputy or senator’s electoral base. After acknowledging that transfer, the municipal manager registers the bank agency where they intend to receive the funds and the area where they plan to spend it. At this point, the city hall needs to present a work plan to the government, detailing how the money will be used.
However, 33 shows held in Minas with Pix amendments do not even appear on Transferegov. For the platform for registering financial movements with Union funds, it is as if these performances had never taken place. The Minas Gerais State Data Center obtained this information by cross-referencing databases from the National Congress and the Minas Gerais State Court of Auditors (TCE-MG).
Altogether, the 33 artistic presentations burned through R$ 5.99 million in public money. Among the shows with no transparency trace is the most expensive one held in the state since 2023 with Pix amendments: a performance by singer Wesley Safadão in Itabirinha, a city of approximately 10,000 inhabitants in the Vale do Rio Doce.
The event, which took place this year, cost R$ 855,000 from public coffers. The municipality has an HDI of 0.653, according to the 2010 Census (data from the last Census have not yet been released), a level that places it in a similar range to countries like the Republic of the Congo, Honduras, and Guatemala.
The list of shows funded with Pix amendments, but lacking transparency, also includes other nationally renowned artists. The sertanejo duo Maiara and Maraísa sang in Gurinhatã, in the Triângulo Mineiro, at a cost of R$ 604,000 last year. The same goes for two performances in Sobrália, in the Vale do Rio Doce: one by singer Leonardo (R$ 570,000) and another by the artist Mari Fernandez (R$ 480,000).
In Sobrália, there is already a paid amendment for financing a million-dollar performance next year at the city’s 24th Milk Festival. The sertanejo Gusttavo Lima, who had announced a pre-candidacy for the Presidency, will receive R$ 1.1 million in Pix amendments to perform in the city of 5,000 inhabitants. The HDI of this city is 0.631, lower than that of Itabirinha, putting it on par with Kenya, Ghana, and Timor-Leste.
