Microsoft announced on Monday that it had received approval from the U.S. Commerce Department to ship Nvidia’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence chips to the United Arab Emirates. The agreement includes licenses under strict safeguards, allowing for the delivery of over 60,000 Nvidia chips, including the advanced GB300 Grace Blackwell chips, to be used in data centers in the Middle East. This move marks a significant development in the technology sector, with Microsoft playing a key role in facilitating the transfer of these advanced AI capabilities to the UAE.
The deal raised eyebrows as it seemed to contradict President Donald Trump’s recent statements regarding the export of such chips. In an interview on ’60 Minutes,’ Trump had indicated that the U.S. would not permit the export of the most advanced chips outside the country. However, the approval for Microsoft to ship the Nvidia chips to the UAE indicates a different approach in practice. This decision suggests a shift in the U.S. stance towards the export of advanced technology, particularly in the AI sector.
The UAE’s access to these chips is linked to its substantial commitment to investing $1.4 trillion in U.S. energy and AI projects. This financial pledge, which is notably higher than the country’s annual GDP, underscores the UAE’s dedication to advancing its technological capabilities. The UAE Ambassador to the U.S., Yousef Al Otaiba, emphasized that the agreement sets a new standard for securing AI models, chips, data, and access, highlighting the strategic importance of this partnership.
Microsoft’s announcement aligns with its broader investment strategy in the UAE, with plans to invest $15.2 billion in technology in the region.
