Mount Semeru Erupts in Indonesia, Leading to Evacuations

Indonesia’s highest peak, Mount Semeru, erupted on Wednesday, showering several villages with ash and triggering evacuations. The authorities raised the alert level to the highest as the volcano, located on Java island, released hot ash clouds, rocks, lava, and gas up to seven kilometers down its slopes. The Geology Agency reported that no casualties have been reported despite the intense activity. Over 300 residents from the most at-risk villages in the Lumajang district were moved to government shelters as a precautionary measure.
