New Rules for WhatsApp and Telegram: Soon a Mobile SIM Card Will be Mandatory

The Indian government has announced strict new rules for popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat to enhance cybersecurity. According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), it will soon be mandatory to have an ‘active SIM card’ in your phone to use these apps. Previously, these rules only applied to UPI and banking apps, but now messaging apps will also fall under this jurisdiction. These new rules are expected to be enforced within the next 90 days, changing the way millions of Indian users engage with the apps.
