Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi Drive Coconut Prices to New Highs

Once a simple indulgence, the humble coconut has turned into a luxury across much of South India, with prices rising from Rs 15-25 just two years ago to between Rs 80 and Rs 100 now, reported The Times of India. The shortage traces back to the pandemic-induced disruptions in the supply chain, climate change effects, and pest infestations, causing significant challenges for the coconut industry. Neglect of plantations and reduced yields have worsened the situation, leading to shortages in copra, oil, and fresh nuts, affecting availability and prices in the market. Despite being the largest producer of coconuts, India is grappling with a global crisis that has impacted both prices and supply.
