PM talks to Lankan President: Indian Prime Minister Discusses Assistance with Sri Lankan President

After the devastation caused by the typhoon in the Karayi region, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on the phone with Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Modi offered additional assistance to Sri Lanka under Operation Sagar, expressing condolences for the loss of life in the country. He emphasized the unity and support of the Indian people towards the Sri Lankan population during these challenging times.

Following the destruction caused by the typhoon in Karayi, 9.5 tons of essential ration were air-dropped from two Indian Navy ships to provide aid. Additionally, 31.5 tons of relief supplies, including tents, tarps, hygiene kits, ready-to-eat meals, medicines, and surgical equipment, were airlifted on three Indian Air Force planes.

To assist in Sri Lanka’s training, a medical team of five from India along with 80 members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams were deployed. The Indian Navy’s vessel, INS Sukanya, also delivered 12 tons of relief supplies to the country. India has sent over 53 tons of aid to date.

Collaborating with the Sri Lankan Air Force, the Indian Air Force conducted extensive rescue operations with their MI-17 helicopters and provided significant relief efforts. They conducted evacuations to Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram using C-130 and IL-76 aircraft, respectively. Two aircraft landed in Colombo last Saturday, delivering food and humanitarian aid to affected communities.

In addition to the rescue operations, efforts are being made to restore operations, restart public services, and establish livelihood opportunities in affected areas. Prime Minister Modi assured to provide all necessary assistance promptly as the ‘First Responder’ in the coming days. Sri Lanka expressed gratitude for the timely and effective response efforts undertaken by India to provide assistance following the disaster.
