Protesters gather at Copacabana Beach in the South Zone of Rio on Sunday afternoon (21). Protesters are gathering on the boardwalk of Copacabana Beach in the South Zone of Rio on Sunday (21) against the Proposal for a Constitutional Amendment (PEC) of Immunity and the project that grants amnesty to individuals convicted for the events of January 8th. The so-called PEC of Immunity, approved in the Chamber of Deputies and now under Senate review, has been criticized for allegedly making it harder to open criminal actions against deputies and senators. CCJ President Otto Alencar (PSD-BA) described the proposal as a ‘punch in the stomach and slap in the face of the voter’ and promised to schedule it for rejection. Additionally, protesters demonstrated against another project under consideration, which proposes amnesty for those convicted of the coup attempts on January 8, 2023. Artists are set to perform at a musical rally this afternoon. Protesters also demand the maintenance of the conviction of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The rally began at 3 pm, but protesters had already been gathering in the area since early afternoon.
