It was almost two in the afternoon on Tuesday (28/10) when the death toll in Operation Containment, carried out by the Civil and Military Police of Rio de Janeiro, nearly tripled: from 24 to 64. News of new shootouts and blocked roads spread throughout the city, chaos erupted from the north zone, between the complexes of Penha and Alemão, the central stage of the operation, and spread throughout the city. Shops closed early, subways were crowded, and at bus stops, passengers wished each other luck in an attempt to get home. The most violent police operation in the history of Rio de Janeiro aimed to execute one hundred arrest warrants and prevent the territorial expansion of Red Command, the oldest criminal organization in the state. The Civil Police has so far recorded over 60 dead, including four police officers, over 100 rifles seized, and 81 arrests. 2,500 agents of the Rio de Janeiro security forces were assigned to the operation.
