Thiruvananthapuram: Concerns loom over the next move of a special investigation team in the Sabarimala gold smuggling case. LD fears that the publicity surrounding the Sabarimala issue may lead to political repercussions. However, the visit of the former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran to the investigation team has raised concerns about a political backlash.
In accepting the party’s decision to pursue the case against Padmakumar, accused of influencing believers, some party officials view it as a positive step. The CPI(M) faces two main issues in the case: taking action against Padmakumar if the investigation team accepts the party’s findings and not jeopardizing the CPI(M)’s leadership.
Additionally, the opposition questions the CPI(M) after registering against Padmakumar’s case but not taking action once the investigation team accepts the party’s findings. This reluctance by the CPI(M) will be a cause for concern if Padmakumar is recognized as a criminal.
The attitude of not protecting anyone considered an intruder in the Sabarimala case is a point affirmed by the government and the party, endorsed by party leaders. However, with two Devaswom Board Presidents in jail, the party’s political responsibility is at stake, as CPI(M) cannot afford to distance themselves from the current situation.
When N Vasu was accused, party leaders replied. Yet, when CPI(M) District Committee member A Padmakumar was accused, State Secretary M.V. Govindan did not lead the intervention.
Will this hesitant position turn into action? Party members in local factions hint at concerns that the LD will target the Left Democratic Front in the promotion of the Sabarimala issue. However, they have not yet suggested that the LD will influence the party’s stance against promoting the issue.
