JAKARTA – Indonesia’s Semeru volcano erupted on Nov 19, leading the country’s volcanology agency to escalate the alert level of Java Island’s tallest mountain to the highest. The eruption resulted in ash clouds reaching heights of up to 5.6km, prompting the agency to advise residents to stay at least 2.5km away due to potential risks. Semeru, towering at over 3,600m, is among Indonesia’s extensive list of almost 130 active volcanoes. Indonesia sits on the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire,’ a highly seismically active area where various tectonic plates converge, leading to a high frequency of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. REUTERS.
