Senate Committee Revives Printed Vote

The Senate’s CCJ (Constitution and Justice Committee) approved on Wednesday (20) the creation of a new Electoral Code that weakens the oversight of political parties, and, in a separate vote, approved the installation of printed votes. It is a victory for the Bolsonaroist political group. The approval of the printed vote proposal was by 14 votes to 12. The idea has already been deemed unconstitutional by the STF (Supreme Federal Court). The main argument is that the printed vote has the potential to violate the secrecy of the vote. The proposal under discussion is a complementary law project that does not have the power to override constitutional decisions. According to the proposal, after the vote is recorded, the electronic ballot box will print each voter’s vote on a ballot that will be automatically deposited in a ‘previously sealed location’. The text also stipulates that the voter’s voting process is only complete after they have verified the generated ballot.
