Forkopimda Takalar, in South Sulawesi, conducted a bountiful seaweed harvest in Punaga village. The seaweed harvesting process was witnessed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto through a video conference (vicon).
The seaweed harvest, which is a program of the Indonesian Navy, took place on Wednesday (10/29). Takalar Regent Mohammad Firdaus, who was present during the harvest process, stated that Takalar is known as an agromaritime region and is one of the largest seaweed-producing regencies.
“The quality is good so it is highly regarded by foreign countries and exported as raw materials for cosmetics and medicines,” said Firdaus.
He mentioned that seaweed cultivation is part of the process of building food security. He also appreciated the Indonesian Navy, especially the 6th Naval Fleet Command (Kodaeral), for supporting seaweed production.
“With seaweed food security, it will help our farmers to develop seaweed production which is supported by the Navy,” said Firdaus.
“Seaweed cultivation is considered one of the leading potentials that can increase the welfare of coastal communities,” he continued.
Firdaus assured that they will continue to collaborate and synergize with Kodaeral VI of the Indonesian Navy in the development of seaweed cultivation. Moreover, he mentioned that the presence of Koperasi Merah Putih can serve as a platform for selling seaweed products.
“This is done by optimizing the potential of coastal land to produce large amounts of seaweed, not only providing raw materials, but also processing them into high-value products to create jobs and boost the local economy,” he said.
It is worth noting that the bountiful seaweed harvest conducted via video conference with President Prabowo also took place in several regions in Indonesia. The harvest was centered in the Kimai farming area, Lampung Province.
