Tamil Nadu Archaeologists Uncover Ancient Mediterranean Trade Links in Berenike, Egypt

To enhance knowledge of ancient maritime trade connections, two Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA) archaeologists have joined an excavation team at Berenike, an ancient port city on Egypt’s Red Sea coast. The city previously revealed Tamil-Brahmi-inscribed potsherds, indicating trade ties between ancient Tamils and Romans. TNSDA Joint Director R. Sivanantham and M. Ramesh, an experienced archaeological officer from Keeladi, have partnered with experts from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology and other nations for the Berenike excavations.
