The Netherlands to Return Stolen Pharaoh-Era Artifact to Egypt

Prime Minister Dick Schoof of the Netherlands announced that an ancient sculpture stolen and illegally transported from Egypt would be returned to Egypt. The stone head, dating back 3,500 years, was discovered at an art fair in Maastricht in 2022. Dutch authorities confirmed that the artifact was looted during the Arab Spring in 2011 or 2012. The Dutch government stated that the artifact will be returned to the Egyptian ambassador by the end of the year. The dealer voluntarily surrendered the sculpture after an anonymous tip about its illegal origin. The sculpture represents a high-ranking official from the Pharaoh Thutmose III dynasty, according to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. The value of artifacts stolen during the Arab Spring is deemed ‘incalculable,’ according to art recovery lawyer Christopher A. Marinello.
