The Potential Impact of Ethiopia’s New Mega-Dam: Promise and Peril

In theory, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has the potential to be a game-changer for the region. With a capacity to generate close to 6,000 megawatts of electricity at full operation, it could significantly boost Ethiopia’s economy. Currently, only about 22% of Ethiopia’s 122 million people have access to electricity, showing the immense potential for improving livelihoods through increased power supply.
