The port, situated in southeastern Iran, was developed by India to provide the landlocked country of Afghanistan with a vital connection to the Arabian Sea and beyond, circumventing the need to rely on Pakistan. Recently, Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, visited New Delhi and highlighted the significance of this sea route in a nod to both strategic foresight and cultural memories. During his address to the media, Muttaqi expressed optimism about the potential return of the ‘Kabuliwala’ bringing his cargo of dry fruits through the Chabahar Port.
