US Initiates UN Negotiations for International Gaza Force Mandate

The US has presented a draft resolution to the 15-member council with backing from Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UAE. A senior US government official expressed confidence in the regional support for the resolution and emphasized the importance of council approval. The official mentioned that the resolution needs a minimum of nine votes in favor to pass and no vetoes from major countries. Discussions on the draft text are expected to happen in the coming weeks. The US believes that countries like Russia and China will not block the resolution, which aims to bring peace to the region. President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have indicated that the international force deployment could happen soon following UN approval.
