X doesn’t always mark the spot: Researchers challenge idea of chromosome shape

A mixture of DNA and proteins, known as ‘chromatin,’ is present in each cell nucleus in a chaotic pool of genetic information. During mitosis, this chromatin is transformed into rod-shaped chromosomes, enabling the precise distribution of genetic material to two new cells. This process has long been considered essential for the correct division of genetic material and inheritance of traits in cells. However, recent research challenges this concept, suggesting that chromosome shape may not always be a reliable marker during cell division. This new perspective opens up possibilities for further exploration of the mechanisms underlying cell division and genetic inheritance.
