20 Indonesian Words Derived from Portuguese Language: A Fusion of Cultures

Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has decided that Portuguese will be taught in Indonesian schools. This was announced during a bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (10/23/2025). “We believe that embracing different languages helps us understand diverse cultures,” stated President Subianto. The decision aims to promote cultural exchange and strengthen ties between Indonesia and Brazil. The Portuguese language has influenced Indonesian vocabulary significantly over the years. Words like “bendera” (flag) and “nina” (girl) have become part of everyday Indonesian language.
