A shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 hit Indonesia’s Central Papua province on Friday, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the earthquake was located 28 kilometers (17 miles) south of the town of Nabire, which is situated on the island of Papua. The earthquake struck at a shallow depth, which can often result in more significant damage compared to deeper earthquakes. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, but the quake caused panic among residents.
