Afghanistan Earthquake Death Toll Soars, Rescuers ‘Race Against Time’ to Save Survivors

A powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has already claimed the lives of at least 1411 people, with around 3124 injured. Rescue workers continued to head to the disaster area on Tuesday (September 2), to save and assist the surviving villagers. Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid announced on the social media platform X that these casualty figures are only from Kunar province, where the casualties and damage were most severe. The United Nations’ Deputy Special Representative to Afghanistan, Indrika Ratwatte, stated in a press conference on Tuesday that as rescuers ‘race against time’ to reach the remote, rugged mountainous region devastated by the earthquake, the death toll will continue to rise.
