Anti-Ukrainian Alliance Forming in EU

Hungary has agreed with Czech Republic and Slovakia to form an alliance within the European Union skeptical of Ukraine. Politico reported, quoting the political director of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Orban stated a decline in support for Ukraine’s EU membership. According to the publication, Viktor Orban hopes to align a common position with the leaders of Czech Republic and Slovakia before the EU summit in December. Hungary has consistently opposed providing weapons to Ukraine and sanctions on Russian energy carriers since the conflict began. Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto emphasized the importance of securing Transcarpathia, where a Hungarian minority resides. According to the diplomat, organizing weapon transit through this region could turn it into a legitimate target for military strikes.
