Anwar: Strengthening Strategic Collaborations between Malaysia, SE Asia, and Ethiopia in Africa

Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of establishing strong partnerships to navigate geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and climate challenges. He highlighted the need for nations to work together to promote stability, open markets, and sustainable growth. Anwar described Ethiopia and Africa as strategic collaborators, not just trading partners, due to the evolving global landscape. Malaysia’s economic involvement in Africa has diversified across various sectors, including telecommunications, aviation, education, agriculture, and energy.

Ethiopia’s ongoing reforms, logistics ambitions, and dynamic workforce offer a solid foundation for deeper collaboration. High-growth segments like digital technology, renewable energy, agro-industry, and infrastructure development present substantial opportunities for cooperation. Malaysian companies have shown interest in leveraging Ethiopia as a key hub for East Africa, indicating confidence in the country’s growth trajectory. Malaysia, as a trading nation, advocates for rules-based multilateral systems and seeks to expand high-standard trade frameworks and networks to enhance market access.

Prime Minister Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability through initiatives like the Madani economy and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030. The country is progressing in renewable energy, electric mobility, and circular economy projects, aligning with Ethiopia’s focus on climate-smart agriculture and green industrialization. Collaboration in these forward-looking areas, through joint ventures and technology exchanges, can drive impactful outcomes for both nations. The Malaysia-Ethiopia High Level Business Forum was attended by 80 Malaysian and 54 Ethiopian business delegates, fostering closer economic ties between the two regions.
