A British resident of Chinese descent born in Arunachal Pradesh found herself in the midst of a diplomatic controversy at the Shanghai airport. The woman, Pema Wangjom Tongdok, was traveling from the UK to Japan when she had a layover in Shanghai. Unfortunately, immigration officials confiscated her passport. They claimed that Arunachal Pradesh is part of China and insisted she obtain a Chinese passport. Wangjom Tongdok refused to go to Japan without her passport, leading to a tense situation at the airport.
