Despite international efforts to phase out fossil fuels lagging behind, a series of storms, cyclones, and unrelenting rains have unleashed flash floods and landslides in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. These disasters have overwhelmed local authorities already stretched to their limits. While monsoon rains are common, climate experts attribute the recent onslaught to a powerful ‘Indian Ocean Dipole’ pattern that magnifies rainfall by altering sea temperatures. ‘Climate change likely plays a part,’ according to Mariam Zachariah from Imperial College London, as a warmer atmosphere retains more moisture.
