Athletico overcomes mistake, nears promotion, and foils Coritiba’s title hopes

Athletico achieved a heroic comeback against Ferroviária, winning 2-1 at the Arena Fonte Luminosa in Araraquara and is close to confirming their promotion to the Brazilian football elite. Additionally, the team prevented their rival Coritiba from clinching the title in this round of the Serie B.
The match saw Athletico overcome a bizarre mistake by goalkeeper Santos, formerly of Flamengo. In the 27th minute of the second half, the goalkeeper attempted to clear a ball in defense, missed, and allowed Fábio Soares to score easily. The turnaround began in the 35th minute of the second half with João Cruz. The midfielder executed a perfect free-kick from the left side, chipping the goalkeeper Denis Junior.
The winning goal came in the 51st minute, deep into stoppage time. Leozinho crossed from the right, and Renan Peixoto headed in the decisive goal. Athletico’s victory prevented Coritiba from securing the title in this round, setting up a decisive final matchday. Athletico reached 62 points, while Coritiba has 65—a draw in the last round hands the title to Coritiba.
Athletico will face América-MG at the Arena da Baixada, while Coritiba plays Amazonas, already relegated, away from home. Both matches will take place next Sunday (23) at 4:30 pm (Brasília time). On the other hand, Ferroviária complicated their fight against relegation, remaining on 40 points and needing results from other matches to stay in Serie B.
Athletic (41), Botafogo-SP (41), and Ferroviária (40) are battling against relegation to Serie C. Athletic will host Paysandu, the bottom team with 28 points in 37 games. Botafogo-SP will also play at home against Avaí, who have no stakes left in the championship. Ferroviária will visit Operário, another team with no aspirations left in the competition.
