Australia and Indonesia finalize new defense treaty: ‘our neighbour will help us’

Canberra has strengthened its military alliance with Washington to counter China’s influence in the Asia-Pacific region. Meanwhile, Jakarta has maintained a more neutral stance, avoiding close ties with the US and being cautious in its dealings with Beijing. Prime Minister Albanese hailed the new treaty with Indonesia as a significant step towards securing peace through joint action. The agreement follows a previous defense pact signed in 2024, focusing on enhanced cooperation in the Asia-Pacific and allowing for military operations in each other’s territories.
