Bali Halts China-Backed Glass Lift Project After Public Backlash

Bali’s governor has taken action to stop the construction of a China-backed glass elevator project on the island’s cliffs. The decision came after photos of the project went viral and sparked public outrage. Governor I Wayan Koster announced the permanent shutdown of the 200 billion rupiah project, which aimed to create a glass lift and bridge for easier access to Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida. Tourists visiting the area currently face a challenging descent down a steep slope to reach the beach, with frequent injuries reported. The glass lift project, a collaboration between China-funded PT Indonesia Kaishi and local company PT Bina Nusa Properti, faced backlash from the community for not aligning with their vision for the area.
