An operation carried out by the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Seop) and the Municipal Institute of Health Surveillance (Ivisa-Rio) shut down two bars and a Japanese restaurant in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone, on Friday night (5), after the team found cockroaches and rodent feces in kitchens, preparation areas, and storage rooms. A total of 11 establishments were inspected, and ten fines were issued for sanitary problems and non-compliance with municipal rules.
According to the city hall, the operation began around 6 p.m. and took place on Voluntários da Pátria and Nelson Mandela streets, an area with a high concentration of bars and restaurants in the neighborhood. Approximately 430 kg of unfit food were disposed of. They were improperly stored or showed sensory alterations. Each establishment received fines of around R$ 4,000.
Seop and Ivisa shut down the ‘Epifania Japa and Bar,’ the ‘Boteco Bom de Copo,’ and the ‘Rosa de Ouro Restaurante, Bar e Pizzaria.’ To reopen, the three places will have to make structural adjustments and correct sanitary flaws identified by inspectors.
Besides hygiene irregularities, the operation also inspected the occupation of sidewalks with tables and chairs. The city hall emphasized that bars and restaurants can use part of the sidewalk as long as they maintain a 1.5-meter clear corridor for pedestrian circulation. Several establishments were instructed to remove furniture obstructing the flow.
‘We will carry out frequent actions in areas with a high concentration of bars. Irregular sidewalk occupation requires awareness. Rio has this characteristic of gatherings on sidewalks, but it is necessary to respect the right of passage. This integrated action with IVISA-Rio also aims to provide food and sanitary safety for the population,’ stated Municipal Secretary of Public Order, Marcus Belchior.
Seop informed that it conducts periodic inspections through the Licensing and Inspection Coordination (CLF). The placement of tables and chairs on the sidewalk is only allowed for establishments with permits and up-to-date payment of the Public Area Use Fee, in addition to complying with a set of rules established by Municipal Decree No. 53,649, dated December 5, 2023. Authorizations can be revoked at any time.
In the last 50 days, Seop issued 276 fines to commercial establishments for irregularities such as illegal sidewalk occupation. Friday’s operation had the support of the Municipal Guard and the Operations Subsecretariat (Subop).
