BMW has officially announced a partnership with Samsung SDI and Solid Power to accelerate the development of solid-state batteries (ASSB), which could be a major technological breakthrough in the electric car industry. The company is already testing the first samples on a modified version of the flagship sedan i7. According to Martin Schuster, BMW’s vice president of battery development, Samsung SDI’s involvement in the project ‘gives a serious impetus towards the implementation of new battery technologies.’ Solid Power will provide the sulfide solid electrolyte, based on which Samsung SDI will create ready-to-use components for BMW’s test vehicles.
