The possibility of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) being held in the Papuda Complex has become a ‘headache’ for the government of the Federal District. The main concern, as highlighted by sources close to CNN, is the health of the former president, but it’s not the only one. Papuda has three reserved locations in case Bolsonaro is sent there to serve his 27-year and 3-month sentence for a coup attempt. These areas are isolated, with one designated for vulnerable prisoners.
Despite the low risk, authorities are wary of potential unrest among other inmates at the Complex’s prisons. Logistics are another major issue raised by confidential sources. If Bolsonaro requires urgent hospital care, meticulous planning is essential due to his status as a former president, necessitating escort and specialized care.
Amid uncertainties, Bolsonaro’s defense has a case set for virtual hearing at the Supreme Federal Court on the next Friday. Should it be rejected, the former president may face incarceration. The concern for Bolsonaro’s health is so significant that the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration has formally requested a medical evaluation from Minister Alexandre de Moraes to assess the ‘compatibility’ between his clinical condition and the healthcare available in Brasília’s prisons.
The request references Bolsonaro’s previous abdominal surgeries and health issues during his house arrest in August. Apart from Papuda, a special room is already allocated at the Federal Police Headquarters in Brasília in case all avenues are exhausted, and the STF rules in favor of Bolsonaro’s imprisonment, as reported by CNN Brasil.
The defense is expected to seek house arrest on grounds of advanced age and delicate health conditions.
