Botafogo has confirmed that goalkeeper Neto has suffered a serious injury in his right thigh and will not play again this season. The 36-year-old player suffered a complete rupture of the rectus femoris muscle and will undergo surgery. The estimated recovery time ranges from three to five months. According to Botafogo, the surgery will take place in the coming days.
Neto was hired as a replacement for John, who was on the verge of moving to English football. The goalkeeper was negotiated with Nottingham Forest. Without him, Botafogo’s starting goalkeeper will now be Léo Linck, who arrived from Athletico earlier this year and spent nine months on the bench. Neto played three games for Botafogo in the Brasileirão and one in the Copa do Brasil.
The goalkeeper was criticized for failing to defend Coutinho’s free-kick against Vasco, which led to Nuno Moreira’s goal. The match went to penalties, and Botafogo was eliminated.
