BRIN to Conduct IMPOLSE 2025 Expedition, Sailing for 31 Days to Study Microplastics in Indonesian Waters

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is set to conduct the Indonesia Maritime and Western Pacific Ocean Longterm Scientific Expedition (IMPOLSE 2025). This expedition will be carried out in collaboration with the Republic of China’s Oceanology Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) research campus. The purpose of this journey is to investigate the presence of microplastics in Indonesian waters.

The expedition will depart in early 2025 and is expected to last 31 days. It will cover various regions in the Western Pacific Ocean and Indonesian seas. The collaboration between BRIN and Chinese research institutions underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling environmental issues, such as plastic pollution.

The IMPOLSE 2025 expedition will prioritize the collection and analysis of water samples to assess the levels of microplastics present. This data will contribute to a better understanding of the extent of plastic contamination in Indonesia’s marine ecosystem.

By conducting this scientific research, both BRIN and its Chinese partners aim to provide valuable insights into the sources and distribution of microplastics in the region. The findings from the expedition will help inform future strategies for mitigating plastic pollution and preserving the health of Indonesia’s oceans.

This collaborative effort highlights the commitment of both Indonesia and China to advancing scientific knowledge and fostering sustainable practices in maritime environments. It also serves as a model for international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges.

Together, BRIN and its Chinese research counterparts are dedicated to promoting scientific research that can lead to informed policies and actions to protect the oceans and marine life for future generations.
