Building collapse in Catete, South Zone of Rio, leaves people injured

The Rio de Janeiro Fire Department is carrying out a rescue operation following the collapse of a building in the Catete neighborhood, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, in the early hours of this Monday (8). So far, 16 people have been rescued with minor injuries. There is information that at least five victims remain trapped under the rubble, which keeps the operation ongoing. The Military Fire Department was called at 4:36 am to respond to the collapse of the building located on Tavares Bastos Street, at the corner of Bento Lisboa Street. According to the department, about 50 firefighters are involved in the incident, including specialists from the GOESP (Special Operations Group) and GBRESC (Canine Operations Group). Drones equipped with thermal cameras are assisting in identifying possible victims under the collapsed structures. The municipal Civil Defense was called in to assess the structural damage. The area has been cordoned off, and residents in the vicinity have been advised to avoid the area until further notice.
