One of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s sons, Rio de Janeiro city councilman Carlos Bolsonaro, has found someone to blame for his father’s conviction in the coup plot trial: Lt. Col. Mauro Cid. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Friday morning, ‘Carluxo’, as he is known, wrote: ‘Congratulations on what you did in Brazilian history, Mauro Cid!’. The message refers to the military officer’s testimony, which was a crucial piece of evidence in the case.
Cid has been Bolsonaro’s key aide during the past few years. Towards the end of the government, he accompanied the former captain during his extended stay in the United States and was responsible for negotiating the illegal sale of jewels gifted to Brazil and diverted by the ex-president. He also played a role in the fraudulent vaccination card scheme involving the former chief and his family members.
After being arrested in connection with these cases – which were intertwined in the courts – Cid agreed to cooperate. His testimony became a critical factor in collecting evidence and was one of the elements used by the justices of the First Turma to prove Bolsonaro’s involvement in the coup plot.
As he cooperated with the authorities, he received a significantly lighter sentence: two years of probation. Bolsonaro, identified as the leader of the criminal organization attempting to undermine democracy, was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison.
