A recent Datafolha survey revealed that the operation in Rio was considered a success by 57% of residents. On the other hand, the government’s disapproval rating reached 34%, the highest during Castro’s term. The institute conducted the phone survey with 626 people aged 16 and over on October 30 and 31 in Rio’s capital and metropolitan area, with a 4% margin of error, resulting in a confidence level of 95%. Moreover, Castro’s management approval is higher among men (49%) than women (32%) and among those who voted for Jair Bolsonaro (67%) in the last presidential election in 2022 compared to those who chose Lula in that election (17%).
Three days after the major operation in the Penha and Alemão complexes in Rio’s North Zone, 109 of the 117 suspects killed were identified by a task force of experts at the Afrânio Peixoto Forensic Medical Institute in the Center. According to the Secretary of Civil Police in Rio, Felipe Curi, 78 of the deceased had a criminal record for serious offenses such as murder, drug trafficking, organized crime, and robbery. Of these, 42 have outstanding arrest warrants and at least 54 out of state criminals were identified, some of whom were identified as leaders of the Red Command faction in their home territories. As per the secretary’s statement, there were 13 criminals from Pará, seven from the Amazon, six from Bahia, four from Goiás, four from Ceará, three from Espírito Santo, one from Mato Grosso, and one from Paraíba. Felipe Curi mentioned specific cases, including Russo, a drug lord in Vitória from Espírito Santo, Chico Rato and Gringo, drug lords in Manaus from the Amazon, Mazola, a drug lord from Feira de Santana in Bahia, and Fernando Henrique dos Santos, a drug lord in Goiás. The secretary also highlighted the national importance gained by the faction in the targeted region in recent years.
