In a statement, the CBF called for ‘total rigor in the investigation of the events that occurred, with a swift and transparent investigation, and for those responsible to be identified and punished severely.’ The statement was poorly received by national federations and Conmebol. In one context, other national associations complained about the treatment given by the Brazilian police to visiting fans, as well as Brazilian teams protesting against racism.
Furthermore, there have been recent conflicts in the relationship between CBF and Conmebol, back in Ednaldo Rodrigues’ tenure. He signed a document supporting Conmebol in a statement against racism, and later issued an official statement with criticisms. In this scenario, the CBF’s statement – now managed by Samir Xaud – caused a new discomfort within Conmebol, as presidents of other associations went to complain to the confederation’s top brass.
Subsequently, the CBF deleted the statement calling for punishment. It is likely that another text will be published, updated with subsequent events, as the blog found out.
