CBF considers changing Brasileirão schedule to assist Flamengo in the Intercontinental Cup

Two different situations are being compared in the decision-making process of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The CBF is considering moving the Mirassol vs. Flamengo match, scheduled for Sunday (12/7), to Saturday (12/6) if the Flamengo team secures the Brazilian Championship title on Wednesday. The objective is to optimize the logistics for the Flamengo team before the Copa Intercontinental. Journalist Paulo Vinícius Coelho brought this information to light.

Last year, the CBF refused to make any changes to the schedule to assist Botafogo. According to reports by journalist Lívia Laranjeira from ‘SporTV,’ the organization vetoed the possibility of moving the match against São Paulo from Sunday to Saturday on the final round if Botafogo had secured the title on the previous round against Internacional.

The CBF’s justification for refusing any modifications was the potential disruption to São Paulo’s logistics, despite the fact that the club had no stake in the Brasileirão title race. Botafogo did not secure the anticipated title, even after defeating Internacional at Beira-Rio. Palmeiras, on the other hand, managed a comeback victory against Cruzeiro in a closed-door match at Mineirão, with Estêvão scoring in stoppage time.

Just four days later, Botafogo claimed the title by defeating São Paulo at the Nilton Santos Stadium. There was little time for celebration as the team immediately flew to Qatar on the same day. With a 17-hour journey and a six-hour time difference, the team had only one training session in the country and, on Wednesday, suffered a 3-0 defeat to Pachuca with a mixed lineup.

If Flamengo secures the Brazilian title on Wednesday by defeating Ceará at Maracanã, without depending on Palmeiras’ result against Atlético-MG, and the CBF decides to advance their match against Mirassol, the Flamengo team would gain an extra day of rest before the Americas Derby against Cruz Azul from Mexico on the 10th in Qatar.
