Young people in rural Limpopo, the South African province bordering Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, face high risks of HIV, unplanned pregnancy, and other societal challenges. Teachers in this region encounter obstacles when addressing sex education with their students. ‘Talking about sex isn’t always easy,’ a teacher in Limpopo admitted. They explained that cultural norms, taboo topics, and misconceptions make it challenging to have open discussions about sexual health. Despite these difficulties, educators in South Africa are working to provide accurate information and support to help young people make informed decisions about their sexual health.
