Chamber approves gradual extension of paternity leave

The Chamber of Deputies approved, on Tuesday (4), the project that gradually increases paternity leave starting in 2027, with expenses covered by the National Treasury, but limited the period to 20 days. The text now moves on to the Federal Senate. The proposal initially included up to 30 days, but there was no agreement in the plenary—despite the project being supported by the female caucus from left to right, there was resistance from other deputies. In 2022, 91 women deputies and 422 male deputies were elected. The text, reported by the PSB leader, Deputy Pedro Campos (PE), establishes that fathers will have 10 days of leave starting in 2027. Each year, an additional five days of leave will be added, reaching 20 days from 2029 onwards. Currently, the law provides for fathers to have the right to five consecutive days of paid leave from work to care for their newborn child.
