The volcanic activity at Ethiopia’s long-inactive Hayli Gubbi volcano eased on Tuesday, but left a path of destruction in its wake. A weekend eruption wreaked havoc in nearby villages and led to flight cancellations due to ash clouds affecting high-altitude flight routes. Villages in the Afdera district were blanketed in ash, causing residents and livestock to struggle with contaminated water and food sources. Meteorological experts predicted the ash clouds would dissipate on Tuesday, allowing flights to resume. Air India and Akasa Air both cancelled several international flights to destinations impacted by the ash clouds.
