FORTALEZA x VÉLEZ SARSFIELD
Game 1: Today, at 7 pm, in Fortaleza
Game 2: 08/19, at 7 pm, in Buenos Aires
The biggest change in Fortaleza is in the dugout. The four-year tenure of Argentine Juan Pablo Vojvoda ended in July, and now it’s Portuguese Renato Paiva (former Botafogo) leading the team. The squad has gained five new players: goalkeepers Helton Leite and Vinícius, left-back Weverson, and forwards José Herrera and Adam Bareiro. The main departure, on the other hand, was veteran defender David Luiz, who moved to Cyprus. Vélez also made significant changes to its squad: losing its two main midfielders, Álvaro Montoro (Botafogo) and Christian Ordóñez (Parma), and defender Valentín Gómez (Betis). But they also reinforced with well-known names in the South American scene, such as Chileans Diego Valdés and Lisandro Magallán, as well as midfielder Rodrigo Aliendro, released by River Plate.
ATLÉTICO NACIONAL x SÃO PAULO
Game 1: Today, at 9:30 pm, in Medellín
Game 2: 08/19, at 9:30 pm, in São Paulo
Like Fortaleza, São Paulo also changed coaches during the Libertadores inactivity: switching from one Argentine (Luis Zubeldía) to another (Hernán Crespo). However, the squad saw fewer modifications. The only confirmed addition for the second semester is Chilean winger Gonzalo Tapia, who was at River. Departures were not as numerous either, with Igor Vinícius moving to Santos, and Matheus Alves being traded to CSKA Moscow. The tricolor’s opponent in the Round of 16 repatriated an old star from the past (Marlos Moreno, who even played for Flamengo) to strengthen an attack that lost its main reference, Kevin Viveros, who was transferred to Athletico-PR.
PEÑAROL x RACING
Game 1: Today, at 9:30 pm, in Montevideo
Game 2: 08/19, at 9:30 pm, in Avellaneda
The best Argentine team in the group stage took advantage of Boca Juniors’ crisis to ‘steal’ a World Cup champion, defender Marcos Rojo (former Manchester United). Racing also made considerable investments in forwards Tomás Conechny (former Alavés) and Elías Torres (ex-Aldovisi). At Peñarol, the biggest news is the return of striker Matías Arezo, who didn’t succeed at Grêmio and has now been loaned back to his former team. Winger Alejo Cruz, who was at Atlético-GO, is another reinforcement sought by the Uruguayans in Brazil for the final stretch of the Libertadores.
